Outback vs. Forester: Which Subaru Crossover Should You Choose?

Subaru SUVs and crossovers have standard all-wheel drive and spacious cargo holds that make them ideal for outdoor adventures near Princeton. Size

Parking/Maneuverability

The new Subaru Outback is about a foot longer than the new Subaru Forester. Its longer wheelbase may enable a slightly more comfortable ride.

The new Subaru Forester's smaller turning radius makes it a bit simpler to park and navigate through crowded parking lots in Trenton.

Passenger Space

Both the new Subaru Outback and the new Subaru Forester seat five passengers. However, the Forester offers Hopewell drivers more room to stretch out. It has 43.3 inches of front legroom and 39.4 inches of rear legroom. The Forester also has 40.2 inches of front headroom and 37.6 inches of rear headroom.

The new Subaru Outback offers less room than the Forester in the front, but more space for backseat passengers. It has 42.8 inches of front legroom and 39.5 inches of rear legroom. It also has 40.1 inches of front headroom and 39.1 inches of rear headroom.

Cargo Space

If having more space to put your camping supplies or your purchases from Pennington Square is a priority, you'll want the new Subaru Outback. It has 32.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 75.6 cubic feet of room with those seats folded down.

The new Subaru Forester has almost as much storage space as the Outback. It has 28.9 cubic feet of room behind its rear seats and 74.2 cubic feet with these seats folded.

Interior

Cabin Materials

The new Subaru Outback has a well-built interior that's awash in top-notch materials. Cloth seats are standard, but leather or StarTex water-repellant upholstery is available.

The new Subaru Forester has a well put-together cabin, but it has more of a no-frills appearance than the Outback. It also comes with cloth upholstery, but leather is available in Limited trims and higher.

Infotainment Technology

The new Subaru Outback comes with the STARLINK® Multimedia infotainment system and two 7-inch touchscreens. Ewing drivers will appreciate that Outback Premium trims and above come with an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The new Subaru Forester also runs the STARLINK® Multimedia infotainment software. It comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, but an 8-inch display is available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available in the Forester.

Safety Features

You'll rest assured about your safety in the new Subaru Outback, which is built with high-strength steel for enhanced crash safety. Careful people in Trenton will like its standard EyeSight® bundle of driver assist technology, which includes pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control.

The new Subaru Forester also comes equipped with the EyeSight® safety suite. Its array of driver aids includes lane keeping assistance, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision mitigation.

Performance

Engine/Acceleration

The new Subaru Forester also comes standard with a 182-horsepower BOXER® engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission, but that's its only available powertrain.

Fuel Economy

Due to the constantly changing gas prices, most Trenton drivers would like to spend less on fuel. The new Subaru Outback returns 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway when properly equipped.

The new Subaru Forester is even more efficient than the Outback. It earns 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with the right configuration.

Ride and Handling

The new Subaru Outback rides softly over bumpy roads in Hopewell on its well-tuned double wishbone rear suspension with coil springs. It also stays composed around corners.

The new Subaru Forester also soaks up bumps and dips in the pavement with its double wishbone suspension. Its well-weighted steering and strong brakes keep body lean to a minimum when navigating twists and turns.

Off-Road Capability

The new Subaru Outback's standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance make it capable of some light off-roading. More adventuresome Pennington drivers will want the Wilderness trim, which has 9.5 inches of ground clearance and advanced X-MODE all-terrain driving modes.

The new Subaru Forester is capable of traversing rutted dirt roads and overgrown logging trails with its standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive. Its Wilderness trim has 9.2 inches of clearance and additional drive modes.

Towing Capacity

The new Subaru Outback can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped, so it can easily tow a small boat to Crystal Lake near Ewing, NJ.

The new Subaru Forester has a maximum tow rating of 3,000 pounds with the correct configuration.
